BET AWARDS 2005...BLACK STAR POWER

By far the best BET Awards show I've seen. Not that the others were bad, but they definitely had their bad moments. LOL. This one was pretty good all the way through. I was thoroughly entertained. I think they did a GREAT job. Kudos to BET.

Now, the highlights of the show for me (not in order of preference):

1. Seeing Alicia Keys. No matter who else is there, I want to see her! And she did not disappoint me last night.

2. Laughing at everybody talking about Beyonce's lap-dance. Nobody mentioned Kelly seducing Nelly (where's Ashanti?) on-stage or Magic laughing his way through Michelle's lap-dance (Cookie had nothing to worry about). Now, I think Terrence Howard was really itching to do some things to Beyonce. He always got that glassy stare in his eye, but last night I could have sworn he had a lil porn-star in that look he was giving her. He made ME nervous looking at her that way...Like I was about to see something on BET I was supposed to see on some of the channels that are "higher up" on the dial (if you know what I mean. Anyway, that was a great part of the show for me. And there wasn't a man in that room (married or not) who didn't want to be on that stage with Beyonce catering to him. Man, that just sounds great to say!

3. My man John Legend taking home a well-deserved Best New Artist Award. Even though he had some flat-a$$ loafers on and took his time walking to stage like his back was aching, he humbly accepted his award that I believe he had locked up! Now sicne I cut my hair a minute ago, I hope I don't hear anymore John Legend look-a-like jokes.

4. John Legend's performance with Stevie Wonder. Easily the best of the night.

5. Ciara's performance. That's my girl and I love to watch her dance. But I am still trying to figure out who actually sang a single note...Her or Mr. Ohhhhhhhh-marion. Omarion can dance like hell! Man I hope I can never dance like that!!!! And Luda ripped his part of Ciara's performance.

6. The opening of the show with the FUGEES! That was great. Even though Lauryn Hill seemed to struggle through some of their old stuff, you gotta love that they came back together and did it on such a big stage. Even though I usually HATE on Wyclef, I can't and refuse to do so. Great way to open the show BET. What happened to Lauryn's World Premier performance though? That was str8 false-promotion! The only part of the show I can say was a disappointment

7. Will and Jada. I am so glad that after all the rumors and ridicule they get that they came together to host this show as a couple and not two separate entities. Their Mr. and Mrs. Smith skits were hilarious. Will is one of my idols and his marraige is what I look at as the model of what I would want mine to be like (minus whatever rumors we all have heard or may believe). It's great that BET took an aim at families in the hosts they chose for the show. And the Coming to America intro was HILARIOUS! Why they have spinning rims on the horse and buggy ya'll???? LMAO!

8. Gabrielle Union and Halle Berry. Need I say any more.

9. Tom Cruise getting on stage giving props to Jamie Foxx and not mentioning Katie Holmes FOR ONCE. THANKS!

10. Still tipping on 4-4's, wrapped in 4 Vogues...That song is HOT!

11. Gladys Knights performace. Man, she still got it! I wonder if Faith and Toni Braxton get along...Hold up...next number...

12. Toni Braxton. Is it me or does she come to every awards show with an outfit on that you cannot take your eyes off. She knows how to get some attention, I swear. Oh yeah I forgot, she's from PG county...That explains it. Our PG county women know how to look good! Yessir!!!!!

13. GAME's performance. DREAMS is my song. He just trips me out how he always talking gangsta about people and dissing dudes then he go everywhere with his son. Not a good move for your son's health GAME. I hope you got some good security. And Mary does what Mary does when she gets up there...Rips it!

14. What was up with Mariah Caery? Looked like she was having trouble walking and she was definitely having trouble singing!

15. What did FREE have on during the pre-show? It was ugly, but no matter what she wears, somehow she always looks good. And fellas, you know what I mean.

16. Ray-J...Man, this is the funniest dude I have ever seen in my life. Why does it seem like he's trying hard as hell to fit in and be like everybody else. That's like me tryna act like I'm a thug! It just don't work Ray-GEEZY! LMAO! Man, where's Russ Parr when I need him?

17. Tito Jackson. I dunno why, I just felt the need to say his name!

18. Steve Harvey. For shouting out brothers with suits on. Fellas, we gotta step our game up and present ourselves professionally if we wanna "move up". Everybody can't be P Diddy, Dame, Jigga, or Master P. And I bet even they don suits every once in a while.

19. The Dame Dash and 50 Cent commercials. I had to admit it, but 50 Cent is now an entity. He's far beyond just music and has successfully marketed and positioned himself to be an icon of hip-hop like Jigga is. Nothing's special about that commerical for his shoe other than he's got Manny Ramirez, Winky Wright, and McNabb in it. He's tapping all sorts of demographics and markets! And Dame. "You gotta know how to Pop Tags and be Young Fresh to Def" This dude's got his own language. I know what you mean DAME, but could you break it down for those who might not know????

20. ALICIA KEYS...Man she is FINE!

Other than a textbook or UNLEASHED MAGAZINE..

This'll be the next thing I read that is comprised of more than 60 pages:

The Psychology of Hip Hop

The Psychology of Hip Hop is a provocative examination of the world of Hip Hop, and how this music genre has shaped the American landscape. Going where no one else dares, The Psychology of Hip Hop effectively explains behaviors of some of the best known Hip Hop stars, like 50Cent, Eminem, Jay-Z, T.I., Lil’ Kim and Snoop Dogg. Think you know? Guess again!

McPhaul, a Mental Health Therapist and Personal Advisor to some of the world’s biggest entertainers, explains what the media only speculates about. The Psychology of Hip Hop outlines the complex maze of R. Kelly’s sexual indiscretions and the heinous exploitation of Hip Hop phenomenon B2K. In addition, The Psychology of Hip Hop answers questions such as, is Sean “P.Diddy” Combs really a Psychopath? And, studies if Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace and Tupac Shakur died as a result of an East Coast versus West Coast rivalry, or if greed of record company executives was the cause of their untimely deaths.

The Psychology of Hip Hop surveys the impact of racism and the influence of legal professionals on the music genre, and in the chapter “Pop Diva Takes A Dive” finally answers the question, did Bobby Brown really ruin Whitney Houston?

Any KING KONG Fans out there???

It's been a long time...

Hey everybody, sorry I've been M.I.A. (not MIAMI, but Missing In Action...September Jron) lately. I haven't really been anymore busy than usual. Just a lil bit more lazy than usual. Besides, all these articles I'm reading about bloggers getting fired from their jobs b/c of what they write on their blogs scared me for a minute. LOL. But I'm back regardless.

Sinec I've been gone a few things have happened in my life (of course). So I'll be dropping some blog entries for you guys to check out. You can look forward (or not) to the following:

-What happened on the night of Prince's Bday?
-Orioles win...AGAIN!!!! And I was there with T's brother and father to see it
-AAFRAM in Bmore (india arie and fertile ground...all in the same night)
-JRock engaged
-Kev engaged (damn, who's next???)
-Other random stuff I can remember.

I'm now back to normal.

Prince BDAY...FOOD AND FUN...Well, food at least

Back on June 17, I told you guys the plans for Prince BDAY. Well, everything went as planned.

We went to Outback (like 5 of us) and then we went to DREAM (like 8 of us). OUTBACK was exquisite as usual (I love that place) but a nice libation-filled dinner was interrupted (at least in Prince's mind) by JRock and Hiwoo talking about careers, jobs, moving ahead in life, etc. You know, the stuff normal groups of friends talk about at times like this. Aside from the women we talk about and loud and lude jokes we let seep from our mouths.

So this genuinely sincere and concern-filled questioning of Prince about his job and future goals turned into one of those quiet sessions where everyone but the people talking feels awkward. So that's how Outback ended...Awkwardly.

THEN, we got to DREAM...One thing I can say positive about DREAM is that there's never a time when you'll go there and find it hard to see a beautiful woman or a woman who has on something extremely enticing. NEVER. I'd put money on that. However, the line at DREAM is always infinitely long and slow-moving. And nowadays at DREAM the crowd seems to have gone done a little in terms of class. It definitely felt like I was in a tourist club and not a D.C. club. Again, it's great to see all these great-looking women around and the music is always good and the drinks are always strong...But I am not feeling the club overall anymore. It's just not how it was a few years back when it first opened as an almost exclusive club. Now it's no different than the VIP Club or the OLD DC LIVE.

We ended up leaving DREAM around 3:30 am and I drove home solo back to BMORE. Yep, don't it plenty of time before people. Don't like to do it. But don't like to sleep on a loveseat in my mom's basement either. Oh well.

So that was Prince's Bday...Good food, not so good night at the club.

PHOTO: AAFRAM in Bmore

AAFRAM, the African American Heritage Festival, is an annual event in Bmore. This is one of the two events during the summer here that's guaranteed to be "on-point" and fun for all ages.

This year, T and I went on Friday evening. It was really nice. Crowded as hell, but nice. We saw Fertile Ground and India.Arie. I must say that Fertile Ground was pretty good, but India.Arie really impressed me with her stage performance, the show she put on, and of course, her singing ability. On top of all that, she looked GREAT!

I must admit that I have been a India.Arie hater in the past few years because I didn't think she was cute. I will eat those words right now because homegirl was looking good. And her personality comes through very nice and down-to-earth. I like that in a woman (shot out to T! Wassup babe!).

I only have one picture because we were a little too far away from the stage for me to zoom in and get a good shot. Not to mention black people were packed in like the Middle Passage out there.

ENGAGEMENT PARTY...

JRock gets engaged...Not a surprise at all...Kev gets engaged...OUT THE BLUE.

I give both of you guys all the props in the world for proposing. That's a big-time move in a positive direction. It's gonna be fun coming to your weddings and being part of your wedding parties. I wish both of you guys the VERY BEST.

PHOTOS: Orioles GAME

Got a chance to see the Orioles (who are actually winning this year) play. I was lucky enough to be invited by T's father and brother. It was a pretty good game. The Oriole park isn't as rocking as Fenway Park (surprise surprise) but it was a good time. I haven't been to Camden Yards for a game in quite some time so it was good to be able to see a game for free. Seats were small as hell though. Here are some flicks below:

BRIAN ROBERTS...He's kiling this year!

SAMMY SOSA...He's kinda sucking this year.

PHOTOS: FATHER'S DAY

This year for Father's Day, Cad (my step-dad) wanted to take it easy. No party, no cook-out, just relax and chill. My mom, she loves Jazz....Loves to be out and about...That's her version of chilling. Otherwise, she's sleep.

So this year for father's day, we went to the Oronco Park Jazz Festival in Alexandria, VA (near Old Towne Alexandria). My mother, stepdad, brother, and I all went down and hung out for a few hours. We got a chance to listen to one of my mom's favorite Jazz Artists Joyce Cooling. Nice mellow day in the park. Literally.

There were carnival rides, vendors, lots of people. It's a really nice family event. This is definitely an event I could go to on an annual basis just to relax and have fun with my family. Below I have some pictures...

KANYE WEST - HEY MOMMA

[Chorus]
(Hey Mama), I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I’m so proud of you
Let me tell you what I’m about to do, (Hey Mama)
I know I act a fool but, I promise you I’m goin back to school
I appreciate what you allowed for me
I just want you to be proud of me (Hey Mama)

[Verse 1]
I wanna tell the whole world about a friend of mine
This little light of mine and I’m finna let it shine
I’m finna take yall back to them better times
I’m finna talk about my mama if yall don’t mind
I was three years old, when you and I moved to the Chi
Late December, harsh winter gave me a cold
You fixed me up something that was good for my soul
Famous homemade chicken soup, can I have another bowl?
You work late nights just to keep on the lights
Mommy got me training wheels so I could keep on my bike
And you would give anything in this world
Michael Jackson leather and a glove, but didn’t give me a curl
And you never put no man over me
And I love you for that mommy cant you see?
Seven years old, caught you with tears in your eyes
Cuz a nigga cheatin, telling you lies, then I started to cry
As we knelt on the kitchen floor
I said mommy Imma love you till you don’t hurt no more
And when I’m older, you aint gotta work no more
And Imma get you that mansion that we couldn’t afford
See you’re, unbreakable, unmistakable
Highly capable, lady that’s makin loot
A livin legend too, just look at what heaven do
Send us an angel, and I thank you (Hey Mama)

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
Forrest Gump mama said, life is like a box of chocolates
My mama told me go to school, get your doctorate
Somethin to fall back on, you could profit with
But still supported me when I did the opposite
Now I feel like it’s things I gotta get
Things I gotta do, just to prove to you
You was getting through, can the choir please
Give me a verse of “You, Are So Beautiful To Me”
Can’t you see, you’re like a book of poetry
Maya Angelou, Nicky Giovanni, turn one page and there’s my mommy
Come on mommy just dance wit me, let the whole world see your dancing feet
Now when I say Hey, yall say Mama, now everybody answer me (Hey Mama)

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
I guess it also depends tho, if my ends low
Second they get up you gon get that Benzo
Tint the windows, ride around the city and let ya friends know (Hey Mama)

[Verse 3]
Tell your job you gotta fake em out
Since you brought me in this world, let me take you out
To a restaurant, upper echelon
Imma get you a jag, whatever else you want
Just tell me what kind of S-Type Donda West like?
Tell me the perfect color so I make it just right
It don’t gotta be Mother’s Day, or your birthday
For me to just call and say (Hey Mama)

That's my shot-out to my mom via Kanye West. I really like that song.

My Tribute to MIKE TYSON: The Man Who Once Was...

Great that is! Mike Tyson. This man has been through so many ups and downs in life, I can't help but respect the fact that he's made it this far. But, the sad part is that he's let the downs define his life and his legacy rather than the ups.

Mike Tyson has gone from rags to riches and back to rags. In recent years, he's been making feeble attempts to regain some respect with the boxing world, pay off his debtors (damn shame what Don King did to this man), and perhaps, prove to himself that he's still got it. Well, it's obvious the man does NOT have it anymore.

I did not see the fight this past weekend and I don't regret it one bit. Why? Because I knew it would be an embarassment to Mike Tyson one way or another. And he never lets me down. From biting off Holyfields ear to press conferences where he calls questions reporters sexuality, this man never lets me down! He will always give me at least one ignorant and seemingly senseless Mike Tyson quotable. And I must admit, I get a kick out of it most times. My personal favorite...."I can't be beat, my defense is IMPREGNABLE!" That right there people, is Shakespearian. Or perhaps I should start a new genre of idiosity, Mike Tysonian.

Anyway, aside from all the in-and-out of the ring exploits, embarassments, quotes, and bad decisions, I honestly think Mike Tyson is a lost soul. A man at 39 years of age still trying to find himself. This is not something we all have not seen before. Perhaps we have friends or family members who are going through the same things Mike is. But Mike's life has played out on an international scale for years now. All because of his past athletic prowess. Unfortunately for him though, the athletic prowess has left and there's nothing to disguise the misguided man we all probably saw 10-15 years ago, but didn't pay it any mind because we were too busy enjoying those KO's in the first round.

Perhaps we all should have really listened when Robin Givens went on 20/20 with Mike (sedated and silent I might add) and aired out there dirty laundry to the world. Mike's violent, he's a manic depressive, etc. She was RIGHT! No, I don't think too fondly of Robin Givens (like most people I know), but she was crying out for help. But a week later, she filed for divorce and everyone wrote her off as a gold-digging, controlling, and indiscrete woman. Maybe all that was true. But one that is definitely true. She saw what the rest of us refused to see. The truth.

My point in all this is that Mike Tyson needs some help. Psychologically he's lost. And a broke man with no sense doesn't turn out to be a good situation where I'm from. So before we all start writing him off and calling him a "bum", I think we should consider ways to help this man. That is, barring he's not beyond help at this point.

This WEEKEND in Review...

Friday night...Bored out of my mind! T watched Assault on Precinct 13 with Michelle. I was at home sleep. Bored out of my mind!

Saturday...Spent all morning cleaning the house. Downstairs, a lil bit of upstairs...Clean, clean, clean. I felt like Cinderella. T and I went to see Napoleon Dynamite at Hopkins around 7:30. They were showing it for free on one of the campus lawns so I got some fruit, popcorn, and water and we went up and had a lil picnic on the lawn while watching the movie. Naturally, we ran into Sei and Mindy on-campus. We all chilled out on the lawn watching one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. What makes people like this movie I'll never know. It must be like Half-Baked where you gotta be high to watch it. Or maybe you gotta be drunk. Unfortunately for me, Saturday night I wasn't in either of those states, so the movie SUCKED!

Afterward, we went to Valentino's and got some grub. T (Bmore born and raised) has never been to Valentino's. Me, having lived near Morgan for the last 5 years, thought that Valentino's was like IHOP back in PG...Everybody goes there after every event. But I guess not b/c she has never been. Well, at least not until Saturday night. The food was GREAT!

Sunday...Mom's fashion show down in D.C. HEEEEYYYYYY MOMMA!!! Afterward I came back up to Bmore and went to T's place. Dinner indoors, but picnic style. Very nice. The rest I can't tell ya'll...Nosey mutha---!!!

PHOTOS: Roll that beautiful Beantown footage...

So I told you guys there were a few things I HAD to do while in Beantown. Most of those things, I was lucky enough to do. So let me walk you through a few pictures (click on them for a larger version)...

First off, my hotel. The very luxurious and opulent Westin Copley Place...

This is the hotel I stayed in my first 3 nights in Boston while attending the Society for Scholarly Publishing Annual Conference. The Westin was connected to a really nice mall. A lil bit too rich for my blood but a very nice hotel. There was a Neiman Marcus and Saks in the mall as well as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Hugo Boss shops, just to mention a few. Needless to say, I spent a lot of time window-shopping. That's what you do when you're balling on a budget!!!

During those three days I had the opportunity to explore some of the things Boston had to offer. Including Copley Square, which was right across the street from my hotel.

A nice building right across the street from the hotel.

I also got the chance to do a little sight-seeing and I found a nice park right on the water. I decided I'd take a few pictures of this area as well...

One of the more interesting things I got to do in Beantown was check out the aquarium. Their aquarium is a LOT like Baltimore's. It's set-up almost exactly the same. I have to give the nod to Bmore's aquarium though.

Check it out...From the outside first though...

The next two are of the African penguins they had on exhibit. I wish T was with me to see these. You would have loved it! That's why I got you the t-shirt.

Many of you are probably familiar with the next set of pictures...You've probably gotten stung at the beach by one of these before.

I even got a shot of a lil pier off the backside of the aquarium...

To get the aquarium, ya boy had to learn the Boston subway system real quick...Naturally I picked it up quite fast...It's color-coded just like the DC line so it didn't take much...Couple shots of their subway are below. I must say though, their trains travel at a snail's pace. Slow as molasses compared to what I'm used to. Shot out to DC Metro...

Last but not least are my pictures from the Red Sox game on Friday night...Too much FUN!

Sipping on a nice brew...

I even have a lil bit of video from the 7th inning stretch at the Sox game (they beat the Angels 7-4)...

Download, save, and open with Windows Media Player...

Overall, I had a good time in Boston. I also went to Six Flags in New England on Saturday (sorry, no pics from that one)...I had a good time in Boston. I am definitely going to try and make it back.

And now, Redskins NEWS....

Can't we all just get along...???...???

Interesting article on homosexuality...

Is a person born a homosexual or not???

I have been in several discussions related to this topic so I found this one interesting. Seems like some heterosexual people are afraid to discuss it, but I'm one who isn't. Check it out.

I'm back like I left something...

Got back in yesterday from Beantown (flicks to come)...VERY NICE trip. I kinda like Boston.

Here's a few of the things I actually got to do while I was there (again, pictures to come):

1. Went to a Red Sox game
2. Went to Six flags New England
3. Ate some real New England Clam Chowder (it was ayight...Campbells out the can is what I am used to)

I couldn't get to the web easily up there -which is kinda crazy considering how all these hotels have internet access- so I wasn't able to post anything while I was there.

I'll go into more detail about the trip in my next blog. Right now I've gotta catch up at work.

Oh yeah...A film to see...TRAIN RIDE...I bought it off amazon.com today b/c I've heard nothing but good stuff about this movie.

Peace!
