DJ Khaled feat Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne - No New Friends

First and foremost, I LIKE THIS SONG. But, there are a few things that I found interesting.

1. They are in the club screaming no new friends. What guys do you know that would do that?
2. None of them really stick completely to the theme of the song on their verses, but I guess this is nothing new in hip-hop today.
3. I missed the entire point of Wayne's verse except he's been Ca$h Money from day one.

Let's take a trip back to 2004...

... and take a look at the XXL magazine article below where a nice sampling of rappers were asked whether or not they're into anal sex. Some of you probably saw this in its original print form but I was just made privy to it today.

I found some of the responses hilarious and my guess is that you will too. My favorites are paraphrased after the jump.


When it comes to anal I'm rolling with Fiddy as far as not really being into it, but some of the other responses had me dying laughing.

5 Reasons why Jay-Z Should & Should Not Respond to Lil Wayne

Welllllll, I guess we won't be seeing this anytime soon, lol

When Wayne's latest album (The Carter IV) leaked, it was quickly plastered all over the InterWeb that Wayne took a shot at Jay-Z on the song, "It's Good" (which is one of my favorite songs on the album). In the song, Wayne responded to a jab that Jay-Z took on "H.A.M." about Baby (wayne's "Daddy"/boss, smh) not having a billion dollars and rappers in general not having the money that Beyonce's has. On that song, Wayne responded by saying:

"Talk about baby money, I got your baby money.
Kidnap your b!tch keep that that how much you love your lady money
I know you fake nigga, press your brakes nigga.
I’ll take you out, that’s a date nigga.
I’m a grown ass blood, stop playing with me."

So apparently, Wayne is so upset that he's considering kidnapping Beyonce. Negro please! Fake threats aside, I took some time to consider why Jay-Z would respond to this diss and why he wouldn't. My thoughts are below.

5 Reasons Why He SHOULD NOT:

This is the easy part, lol.

Five: The Carter IV doesn't need any more free promotion

The Carter IV isn't all that (to me). About 5-7 good songs on there but it doesn't really need any more free promotion, especially not from someone whose opinion tends to mean a lot to the hip-hop fanbase.

Four: Watch the Throne is better than the Carter IV

If we let the works of music speak for themselves and ask the rappers to stop dissin, Watch the Throne impresses more than the Carter IV. No need for Jay to respond (though I assume he will on his own time via a song, probably on the next solo release much like he did to Beanie Sigel on "Why I Love You" off Watch the Throne) when his most recent release is the better of the two.

Three: Like my boy Laf said, when you take shots at someone that's really your idol (re: GAME), it shouldn't count

When it boils down to it all these young, talented, and confident rappers want to be like Jay-Z. Whether it's the fame, the money, the lady he has, or just plain ole' success at your craft, these younger rappers would be stupid not to want to be like Jay-Z in one of those ways. It's not a secret that Wayne looked-up to Jay-Z and so much so that he worked with Jay-Z on the Carter III. So taking shots at the throne might not mean much when you presumably had to convince him to do a song with you on your last album, lol.

Two: Wayne is a good rapper

Lil Wayne is not shabby by any means on the mic. Jay-Z would have reason to be a little nervous about battling Wayne. Not nervous like it's Eminem or anything but yet-and-still, just a little nervous. Wayne's proven that he's very adept at dropping solid punchlines and coming up with various other types of slick lyrics. I'm sure he'd rise to the challenge of Jay-Z and step his game up. He's got a lot more to gain from a battle than Jay-Z does. Which leads me to my number one reason...

One: For Jay, there's more risk than reward

There's a lot of risk involved here for Jay-Z. Fans have been wanting this for a minute now and I'm sure Jay-Z is aware of that. He's also smart enough to know that if he battles Wayne and is perceived to have lost, it will hurt him MUCH MORE than it would hurt Wayne if he lost. Besides, even if Jay-Z "wins" (winning/losing seems blurry sometimes), Wayne's gonna have his stans in tow regardless. So why take the risk of a "battle" if you're Jay. Respond once on your own terms and time and leave it there. Jay-Z is NOT gonna respond now and boost Wayne's album sales.

Honorable Mention: Beyonce is pregnant

Who cares about Lil Wayne when your wife is pregnant with your first child? Seriously.

5 Reasons Why He SHOULD:

Five: Because hip-hop is about competition and Jay-Z is supposed to be the best

With being the best and proclaiming the throne comes shots from any-and-everywhere and you've gotta defend the crown. On a basic level, Jay should want to defend himself. But we all know Jay-Z is more strategic than reactionary so he'll probably play chess and not checkers.

Four: This is what hip-hop needs

Jay-Z likes to talk about how hip-hop needs "events" yada-yada-yada. Watch the Throne was an "event" in a sense and this would be an even bigger event I would imagine. Wayne vs Jay-Z or Jay-Z vs Wayne, people, fans, and stans (on both sides) would love to see it. It'd be the most anticipated generational hip-hop battle since Nelly vs KRS-ONE (ha!)

Three: Didn't Jay-Z give Wayne the throne on the Carter III?

Last time I checked, on the Carter III, Jay gave Wayne a HUGE big-up when he said:

I'm right here in my chair (my chair)/With my crown and my dear
Queen B as I share mic time/With my heir/
Young Carter

If I were Jay-Z I might feel like Wayne is being just a little bit disrespectful now by throwing a shot his way.

Two: Jay-Z was right!!!

Wayne's upset because Jay dissed baby with the "you got Baby" money line and said that other rappers don't have his lady's money. Well, he's right lol. Baby doesn't NOT have a "billie" and most rappers don't even have HALF of Beyonce's money, lol. Not that it really matters at all but it's true. Wayne and Baby can probably compete with Beyonce more than other rappers and more than Jay would admit but still, the line is probably more true than false. And for the biggest reason Jay-Z should respond I give you this...

One: This!!!!!!!!!

The worst part about this picture in my opinion is that Wayne turned his head to the side. That's the most gay part about this whole thing. And from last night's MTV VMAs... Wayne's getting really colorful and eccentric with the wardrobe I see.

The video does this song no justice. This is one of my all-time favorite Lil Wayne songs (maybe I should start a formal list) and definitely a song that is still in the rotation even months after it first dropped. I remember being in LIV in Miami back in January going bananas to this song when the DJ dropped it. If only these two cats could have stayed out of jail maybe the video could have been as dope as the song.

Every time I hear the song "Music For Life" I think about how much music is a part of my life and how much I enjoy listening to music.

I'm a hip-hop guy so I tend to listen to way more hip-hop than any other genre of music. For real, Drake should just let Kanye have the "Forever" track they dropped yesterday. Yes, I know its for LeBron's documentary soundtrack! Yes I know it's Drake's song. But Kanye OWNED everybody on that joint. Eminem gave Yeezy a little bit of competition but Kanye owns that track. And Drake's verse on the original is definitely better than his verse on this release.

For those of you that are confusing Marshall's fast flow with him having the best verse, get your mind right. Although the homie DP thinks that Em owned the track (and makes a very good argument on his blog), I think that his post about this track shows exactly why I feel Kanye owned everybody on it. Try this...

3. The diss as a marketing plan has not been viable since 50/Ja. Don't people know this?

Young Money - Every Girl
Young Money (emphasis on the "young") is taking "it" (read: misogyny) to a whole new level with this one. Shorty the Pimp would be proud. I know I listen to some hard-core hip-hop but this song just made me re-evaluate the possibility of what hip-hop in the future will be if Lil Wayne is the "latest-greatest..." Not only that, it made me re-evaluate some of the stuff I've listened to and loved in the past.

A couple thoughts after listening to this one...

Fellas no matter how much you want to like this joint just imagine what your mom would think if she heard you listening to this. I know I listen to some stuff I probably wouldn't want my mom to hear but if I slipped up and she heard this particular song I might get a beating. Seriously.

How could you (in your right mind) play this while any self-respecting woman was in the car with you?

How could any woman allow a dude to play this with her in his presence?

SMH. Why would they waste such a good beat on a song with this content? Idiots! This could have been one heck of a radio hit if they turned the content in the opposite direction. BAAHHHHHHHH, idiots!

I was never a follower of Mad magazine back in the day but to make the cover is pretty significant in terms of your level of mainstream popularity. I guess after the Carter 3 moved a crapload of units the first week Weezie was propelled into pop star status á la Snoop, 50, Jay, Ye, and Diddy.

But I just think the image itself is dope.

The TIs at Def Jam/Universal must listen to NPR

Am I the only person who has noticed that within the last two weeks, there have been a crapload of Freeway and Young Chris songs hitting the InterWeb/streets (fyi - the InterWeb is the new bootleggah, minus the exchange of cash for goods)?

Anywho, my man Sei put me on (I PUT ONNNN) to this NPR review of the Carter 3 (an album I kinda went on a lil while back). In said review, the author (Robert Christgau) suggest that the Carter 3's sales (a milli a milli a milli, in the first week) were due to "a daring marketing strategy that doubled as a cocky musical challenge" and that "In the two-and-a-half years between major-label releases, Lil Wayne whetted his fans' appetites by giving away more songs than anyone can count."

The key there is that he gave the shyt away. So now I'm seeing artists like Mickey Factz, Freeway, Young Chris, and others with songs poppin up all over the InterWeb. Mickey is definitely giving his songs away in the form of a mixtape series called "The Leak". I'm not so sure about Freezer and Young Chris leaking everything that's hit the name from them on purpose, but this stuff isn't hitting the nets by chance either. And while I think Mickey's leaked songs are a pretty brilliant mixtape concept, it doesn't have me itching to hear an entire album, just "Good Money". Not that Mickey's songs are wack (because they aren't), but because I'm not into being inundated with free songs off the InterWeb because there's far more noise than there is music. And that's what I think the problem is with technology and music nowadays. The market is flooded with crap.

But back to my original point...

My guess is that the TIPPORDS (read: TIs) at Def Jam/Universal saw the success of the Carter 3 and thought similarly to what Christgau seems to have thought. That is... "Wayne put out a bunch of free shyt and then he sold a million in the first week because fans started itching for more." Then the TIs started thinking it could work for everyone else. Not too shrewd, not to stupid either though. Why wouldn't it be worth a shot for other investments artists?

Leaking songs to the net prior to an album's release is nothing new. Lots of artists have leaked a mixtape (or two) to create a buzz for their albums. But Lil Wayne took the shyt to a stupid-azz level. I repeat, a stupid-azz level. There were so many songs and mixtapes hitting the net/streets between the Carter 3 and his release prior to that, that I got tired of hearing it. No bull. I will give him credit in that he obviously had a serious work ethic that most of these artists don't seem to have. But I can't be convinced that the leakage of 6 or 10 or 20 songs (or ten mixtapes) by any other artist in a relatively short period of time means anything either, unless all of (or a majority) of those songs are completely and undeniably DOPE. Not that Wayne's were dope across the board, but there were so many released that you couldn't help but liking some of them if for nothing else than his slick wordplay.

But my point in this post is that maybe (just maybe) the higher-ups at these record labels are going to start pulling a Lil Wayne and releasing a bunch of their artists' records in the form of mixtapes, interWeb leaks, or some other form of "free promotion" in an effort to create a buzz similar to that of the Carter 3. I'm all for free music (of course) but I personally think it's a crock of shyt that all those songs were the sole reason that people wanted to buy the Carter 3. I think that it was a combination of lots of factors like media hype, Lil Wayne's level of lyricism, his features, his run-ins with the law, and the free ish he unleashed on the hip-hop audience. But I do agree with Christgau in that Lil Wayne "redefined" the mixtape scene.

I wonder if this is going to pan out well for Chris and Free considering studio time is not free and I am sure Def Jam is going to want their advance money recouped. Rappers might want to start investing more in themselves (ie - their product) by purchasing top-notch home studios (that is, if they own a home or momma/roommate wil let them) and providing their favorite producers with Food and Liquor (and weed probably) in order to keep the costs low on all this music they are gonna give away free on the InterWeb. It is a Recession, isn't it?!?!

Not to shyt on a good (but not great or classic) CD by Lil Strapped and Bent Over but his album isn't even close to being as dope as NaS mixtape and isn't anywhere near as original and "hungry" as Wale's mixtape.

Put down that formula-driven commercial rap and pick up a mixtape people! Actually, pick up TWO mixtapes!
