Video: LIfe Long - Rockie Fresh feat. Rick Ross & Nipsey Hussle

This joint is tough. I only paid it mind because I saw Nip and Ross featured but Rockie Fresh has another joint I like called "God is Great".

A mediocre video treatment for one of my favorite songs on "God Forgives, I Don't"

This video treatment is weak. Or maybe I enjoy this song a lot so I was hoping for more. But even putting the fact that I like the song aside, having half-naked/body-painted women, wild animals for a psuedo tough guy affect, and Ross's breastessess out do NOT make for a good video treatment. Not to mention the increasingly invasive Ciroc and MMG-related ads in all Ross's web-released videos, smh.

DJ Khaled feat Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne - No New Friends

First and foremost, I LIKE THIS SONG. But, there are a few things that I found interesting.
  1. They are in the club screaming no new friends. What guys do you know that would do that?
  2. None of them really stick completely to the theme of the song on their verses, but I guess this is nothing new in hip-hop today.
  3. I missed the entire point of Wayne's verse except he's been Ca$h Money from day one.

Video: Meek Mill feat Rick Ross - Believe It

Been foolin' with this joint for a minute and now it done messed around and hit the radio so I'm probably gonna stop liking it soon, lol.

In other news, if this ain't a boring azz Nas Streem Dreams video rip-off I don't know what is. Dudes need to start getting more creative with these videos for real.

Dumb Rappers Need Teachin': Rick Ross Edition

This is more like an Uncle Luke/Rick Ross edition but Luke dropped some rather OBVIOUS jewels in an open letter to Rick Ross. Highlights below.
"all this gangster bullshit is jeopardizing your career. No club or arena is going to risk people getting shot. You can forget about doing any tours or CD signings. And if you can't make money, watch how fast Warner Bros. Records turns on you. "

"It's a shame you can't enjoy life without spending part of your earnings on heavy security or risking your freedom by purchasing an arsenal. Remember, that's what landed T.I. and Lil Wayne in prison. You don't want that to happen to you. However, those are the consequences of rapping about being something you're not. "

"very gangster rapper takes on the role of a real hood legend to build up street cred. But I don't want you to fall into the trap of believing you are really a gangster. "
The full article can be read here. Luke makes some good points and I agree with everything he said except, I don't think it's as easy as just "squashing your beefs". Let's not trivialize how difficult it would be for Ross to squash his "beef" with a bunch of different sets of Gangster Disciples by paying them off. As soon as he's paid off one or two, others would pop up because well, now they know they can extort him. And how exactly, does one go about paying off a known gang/drug organization after all these public threats and not end up (by legal definitions) involving himself in illegal activity? So while I applaud Luke for keeping it real in this letter and stating some obvious truths, I think Rick Ross is probably in a tough spot and he is going to need that security and arsenal. But like Luke basically said, this is the consequence of purporting a gangster lifestyle when you're pretty much removed from that life (if you were ever involved) because you're rich.

Rick Ross almost got the worst birthday present of all the times!!!

Glad to see this dude didn't get murdered and like 50 said: "BIG got hit in that passenger seat, Pac got hit in that passenger seat. Now I'm 'ridin' 'round in the passenger seat."

The moral of the story??? Don't ride in the passenger seat It's better to be a rapper that doesn't talk tough all the time (Drake) than it is to be a tough-talking rapper that as a result, makes himself a target for even more people than those who are already haters by nature. You don't get no points for poppin shots at Drake but if you hit Fat Ricky that might count for something in the streets.

Video: DJ Khaled - I Did It For My Dawgs

Featuring Rick Ross, French Montana, Meek Mill, Ace Hood, and Jadakiss. This is my favorite joint off "Kiss the Ring". LOL at how Khaled snuck an Ace Hood verse on the video version of the track.

Soooooooo, BET Banned the "Hold Me Back" Video

Really? I'm not even a fan of this song but the fact that BET decided to ban it kinda rubs me the wrong way. BET now has a conscience about the way black folks are portrayed? Really though?

Considering the fact that they banned that Little Brother video way back when (which was completely ridiculous), I don't understand what the point is. This song is no different than Juvenile's "Ha" (shown below) and they surely did not ban that video (shot out to Mannie Fresh by the way). I don't get it. BET apparently is very selective as to when they care about how Blacks are portrayed and it makes no sense. I guess Ross is a clairvoyant of sorts when you consider these (BET) ninjas trying to hold him back.

Hopefully God forgives Rick Ross for this album, I know Nas Will

I'll leave a full post about Ross's "God Forgives, I Don't" alone and just say that the album is below average by great hip-hop album standards and average if not below even by Ross album standards. A few stand-out cuts, "3 Kings", "Sixteen", "Diced Pineapples", and my personal favorite "Amsterdam". There are a couple others I like as well but overall the album disappointed me even when confining my thoughts to "how does this measure up compared to other Fat Ricky joints". Yep, I said that in my head I promise.

With all that said, Ross's album doesn't really come close to touching Nas's album and I'm not overwhelmingly impressed by Nas's album either. It's a good Nas album but I'm not convinced it's a classic like lots of Nas stans seem to be proclaiming. But I digress.

The real point of this post is to let you have a listen to what I think would be the best possible combination of tracks from the two albums, "God Forgives I Don't" and "Life's Good". These are two most important releases of the last month or so in hip-hop and I'm not blown away by either (in fact, I'm listening to Childish Gambino's "Royalty" mixtape more than either of these) so I decided to create a mash-up of the two (hence the title of this post). Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I do.

Video: Stalley - Party Heart

Why Tity Boi aka 2 Chainz is not in this video is the question that needs to be answered. This is definitely one of my favorites off Rick Ross's "Rich Forever" mixtape and it's now on Stalley's "Savage Journey to the American Dream" mixtape. Stalley's been mentioned here before and maybe after I listen to his latest mixtape I'll have something else to post about him. We'll see.

Video: Wale ft Meek Mill & Rick Ross - Ambition

Definitely one of my favorite tracks off of Wale's album. LOL at Ross with those too small sunglasses on though.

I wish this song was going to be on "God Forgives, I Don't"

I mentioned this song (and how Jay Rock somehow ended up with this beat) before and every time it comes up in my iTunes shuffle I think the same thing, "How in the world did he let this beat get away?!?!?!?!"

Video: Rick Ross (feat. Drake & French Montana) - Stay Schemin'

Do yourself a favor and go ahead and skip to Drake's verse (1:45)...

"You wasn't with me shootin' in the gym!" <-- Best (read: most hilarious) line so far this year in rap???

Like everyone else I'll assume that Drake threw at least one shot at Common in the verse, probably several. I just don't understand though, why Drake took to talking about weaponry and "running into" people. We all know this will come nowhere near that level. It could however, be a pretty decent "rap beef/battle" though I think Common would really hurt Drake's feelings if he decided to pull a "Bitch In You" on Drake like he did when he dropped that on Ice Cube back in the day.

Video: Stalley feat. Rick Ross - Lincoln Way Nights Remix

I like Stalley. Not sure why he hasn't gotten more spotlight since he signed with Maybach Music but hopefully he can continue to make more joints like this. His "Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music)" mixtape is definitely worth a listen. It's probably not what you'll expect though.

THROWBACK! Clipse - Grindin'

"Legend in two games like I'm PeeWee Kirkland"

Would you believe that this was released in 2002? And even more interesting from a personal standpoint is that it was released on my birthday in 2002.

This song is an undeniable 2000s-era hip-hop classic. This probably paved the way for the mainstream coke-rap movement we had a few years back with Jeezy that was followed-up shortly thereafter by Rick Ross, and has now tapered off a bit. Now it's all about smoking weed and shyt *shrugs*. And who would have ever imagined when this song dropped that Pusha T[on] would be signed to a label run by Kanye West who was (around the time it dropped) coming off producing some of your favorite songs on Jay-Z's, The Blueprint.

P.S. - Aside from some of the joints Pharell has done for Jay-Z and Nore, this is probably my favorite work by him.
