Video: Ellis feat Styles P - Misled

I heard this joint for the first time a minute ago and it just popped up in my iTunes the other day and I realized that this Ellis guy dropped two nice verses on this joint. And no, I am not posting this because he is from Baltimore lol.

Kanye's Black Skinhead video, dope and disappointing at the same [damn] time

Kanye just dropped an interactive video for Black Skinhead. From a technological perspective, it's awesome. You click play on the splash page and from there you can toggle the speed at which he raps using a slider in the upper right corner of the screen.

I don't think I've ever seen an artist (hip-hop especially) do this before. Kanye took the functionality built into the web and released his video straight to the InterWebs, it's a great idea/move. This video could never work on television in the same way it does on the web. And who runs home and watches videos on TV anymore anyway (sorry teenagers, I'm grown)? So that's the dope part of the video. The disappointing part of the video is the actual video itself. It's Kanye CGI'd to look like the Incredible Hulk (he's jacked with a shimmery chain on - the graphics guy/people did a kick-ass job) and posturing/running around in the video. I mean, I get it... This is "ARTISTIC". It definitely is but it's also pretty damn boring too (on some ole' "blavant garde" type shyt). Or maybe I'm just not artistic enough to appreciate the video fully, which could definitely be the case (just like it was/is with Yeezus as a whole).

Ok, ok. That was a little harsh. I have to admit, this isn't as bad as it could have been or as bad as I expected it to be. But it still isn't good. This is another example of why rappers shouldn't be co-signing athletes attempts at rapping even if they are friends with or hang out with the athletes. Sometimes a rapper should just say "I see you trying homie but you should just do a cameo in my video and not even worry about being a rapper, you're already paid." Unlike the recently discussed Jay DatBull, DeSean Jackson is already rich, went to college, and presumably is only doing this to because he thinks he can and/or it's a fun hobby he can afford. But even if that's the case, he may want to stop while he's ahead.

Mixtape: Dexter's Lab by Dexter Darko

"Dexter Darko" is a cousin of one of my best friends from childhood and as a result we've become cool over the years and I love the fact that he's a bright young guy going to school but also doing something he has a true passion for, rapping. For all you aspiring rappers out there, yes it's fine to go to school but still find ways to pursue your hip-hop dreams (and still have a solid education to fall back on). All that aside, "Dexter" has sent me some tracks over the years that I've previewed and given some feedback on and some of them has been great and I've wanted to post but he asked that I not post until he is ready to release his material to the broader public. Makes sense. Well, now's that time! I just got an email from him about his mixtape, Dexter's Lab and I'd like to share it.

For doing a completely irrelevant video treatment for your "Headband" video that is also amazingly sexually gratuitous in "'Flashdance'-meets-super-soft internet-porn" sort of way. Apparently these chicks or at least some of them are pornstars which means Bobby Ray and Tity Boi should lose a couple sexual gratuity points for. Let's be real here, if they get paid to have sex (while being filmed) for a living then this video they should just do for free, right? Or at least for a discount. Not that there's anything wrong with getting paid to be a professional whoo-er actress or anything. I'm sure this is what every set of parents wants for their chillun. Anyway, I ran across this yesterday going through my Feedly feeds and the first thing I saw in the video preview/still was two women bent over in thongs and well, something compelled me to watch. And clearly, it only got better from that point. Aside from not calling my boss's boss a d*ck to a 30th different co-worker, I think it's the best decision I made yesterday.

This can't be the official video, can it? Oh yeah, this is probably NOT SAFE FOR YO'JOB, unless you work for Brazzers or West Coast Productions (ha!).


Funny how there are words on the screen yet I am not paying any attention to them whatsoever. Now that I think about it, I haven't even really paid attention to the song at all (I guess that's the point). Let me go back and listen to B.o.B. spit some lyrics and 2 Chainz set the bar for mediocre hood verses even lower.

A mediocre video treatment for one of my favorite songs on "God Forgives, I Don't"

This video treatment is weak. Or maybe I enjoy this song a lot so I was hoping for more. But even putting the fact that I like the song aside, having half-naked/body-painted women, wild animals for a psuedo tough guy affect, and Ross's breastessess out do NOT make for a good video treatment. Not to mention the increasingly invasive Ciroc and MMG-related ads in all Ross's web-released videos, smh.

Throwback! Kool G. Rap - On The Run

Had to dig way in the "crates" for this one. It's another classic. Kool G Rap doesn't really get mentioned a lot nowadays but he was one of the best rappers back in the day. In hindsight, this was probably the first rap song I ever heard where the artist talked about killing someone. Of course, it was all a part of the story he was telling but it still jumped out at me when listening to the song since I had to be about 12 back then and I'm pretty sure my stepfather would not have let me listen to this if he knew I was, lol.

Not sure if ya'll remember Redman when he first came out, but this is from back when Redman was definitely one of the best lyricists in hip-hop. When Nas started saying hip-hop was dead this is the hip-hop he was talking about.

DJ Khaled feat Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne - No New Friends

First and foremost, I LIKE THIS SONG. But, there are a few things that I found interesting.

1. They are in the club screaming no new friends. What guys do you know that would do that?
2. None of them really stick completely to the theme of the song on their verses, but I guess this is nothing new in hip-hop today.
3. I missed the entire point of Wayne's verse except he's been Ca$h Money from day one.
