Another Reason Newark (NJ) Mayor Corey Booker is AWESOME

Aside from being a very informed, grounded, energetic, devoted, and otherwise great politician Corey Booker evidently has a great level of patience for reckless Twittering.

From Twitter to Real Life

Me and my buddy Lance have joked around a few times about how many of our individual friends knows about either he or I because we tweet to each other. He's got followers, I've got followers, and a lot of his followers end up following me and a lot of my followers end up following him. And he follows some of my friends and I follow some of his friends, you get the point. But a lot of his friends I've never met in-person and half of my friends he's never met in-person.

<sidebar>Which is kinda of odd now that I think about it because Lance and I did go to high school together though we didn't hang out much and we were a year a part.<endsidebar>

And because Lance and I are just as social in real-life as we are on the TwitterNets, a lot of times we meet each others friends (that we know from Twitter only) in actual real-life places and events. Yes, REAL LIFE! Who woulda thought it!

Typically, it goes something like this:

Lance: Mike, this my homeboy "XXXX". He's @XXXX on Twitter. [Lance speaks to "XXXX] Mike is @mcarroll-something on Twitter.

Me: [speaking to "XXXX"] Oh, yeah what's up man, that tweet about [insert rapper or sports figure or video vixen name here] was hilarious, good to meet you.

XXXX: Oh yeah man that was funny to me. I saw your tweet about your blogpost on DMV slang, that was pretty funny.

And that's it. All potential awkwardness about knowing someone via the InterWeb but NOT REALLY knowing them in-person, avoided. From there, if both parties are cool, everything is cool. If one or both don't like one-another, that's normal too. But at least the awkward Twintroduction is out of the way.

The "Twintroduction" is something I think Lance and I both have tons of practice at because we're both on Twitter "meeting" people and having various random convesations. In general though, I think cool and down-to-earth people tend to become friends with, follow and constantly communicate on Twitter, or otherwise regularly interact with other cool and down-to-earth people. For that reason, I'm not surprised that Lance and my friends get along well in real life just like me and his friends get along well in real life. But I can imagine it's not so peachy-keen for everyone. Hell, I'm sure I'll have an awkward "I know you on Twitter but I don't really know or want to really know you" moment. It's not like I'm stalking Alicia Keys on Twitter while waiting to meet her in real life and say "You don't remember when I tweeted you about wanting to give birth to your next child"... Nothing of the sort.

Shot out to Rashard Mendenhall

Aside from the second "r" in his first name (I'm used to "Rashad", oh well), I didn't pay much attention to Mr. Mendenhall unless it was fantasy football related or "they playin' the Ravens this weekend" related. Just for the record, I'm a Redskins fan (go ahead, laugh it's cool) living in Baltimore. For that reason, I follow both teams. Back to my point though...

Now, after the media has made a big deal about Mendenhall's Twitter comments (see video below) regarding Osama and 9/11, I gotta say I have a little bit more respect for him. It's not that I agree with everything he's saying but I respect that he's unafraid to speak up and say how he feels and stand on one side of the fence whether he's perceived as wrong or right. Much respect to him for that. And I also give him props for backing up Adrian Peterson and his comments that football players are modern-day slaves. I'm not saying I agree with those exact words when not spoken in the proper context but it's NOT unchartered territory for someone to compare the two.

As for the comments Rashard made...

"What kind of person celebrates death?" This is a question we'll all have to at least ponder for a second after Osama bin Laden's death. If you're not thinking about this right now you're either under a rock or so morally and ethically disconnected that there's probably no helping you anyway. And yes, it's an accurate statement to make that it's "amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak." I'm sure some would argue that we've technically heard Osama speak via those viral (ha) videos he used to drop like mixtapes, but that's beside the point. The point here is that we can hate hate hate all we want and judge Osama for his actions (or alleged actions, depending on the instance and how you feel) but in the end, God is his ultimate judge. And with that in mind he deserves the same respect in death that any other human being does.

I repeat, Osama bin Laden deserves the same respect in death that any other human being does.

By no means am I condoning anything he did during his life that hurt people and their loved ones. And by no means am I saying that he wasn't a threat and danger to me, my family, and everyone else's family.

BUT....

If the shoe were on the other foot and your cuzzin Spook/Tiny/Nuke/Tim-Tim/or-whoever (trust me, everybody got that one cousin) that sold drugs, shot people, and perhaps killed a person or two and you knew he just wasn't a "good" person per se...

You still would not want the picture(s) of him in death with his body riddled with bullets plastered all over television and the Interweb. I took issue to how the U.S. handled the Saddam Hussein death sentence and I will probably have a similar issue in this case but it seems like Obama's going the way of NOT showing the pictures of a dead Osama. Kudos to our President for seemingly having some respect for Osama or at the least some perspective on this situation.

Because most of us only know what the media tells us about Osama I think it makes it easier for some to rejoice in his death. There's no real human connection there for you to feel like you're doing something that may not be quite right. All we know is what we're told. Even if all of it is true, can't we just accept the fact that he's dead, say a prayer for our lost ones and let them know how much we still love them, and MOVE ON feeling like there's one less terrorist (out of many still left) to worry about?

Like I said in my last post about this topic, this is not going to be the end of terrorism and we all know that, even those out there celebrating. This is an exhale moment. Exhale and be relieved on a small level. But in the big picture, what are we rejoicing about? This is like LeBron and D. Wade having a parade after beating the 76ers in the first round! You would be like, "Get-da-fugg-outta-here! You still gotta get past Boston, not to mention Chicago and probably the Lakers." I make that comparison to say, the war ain't over yet, we just beat a team in the early rounds that it took us (literally) years to outsmart, catch up to, and ultimately take them out. There are more fish to fry.

Eff the Flow the Jocking My SLANG!

The following post is written from the perspective of Mike La Flare. If you don't know, you better ask @Apuje, @RahofEyekon, @LAFgoesON, or @Nicole_Alexis.

I be on twitter sometimes right. And when I be on twitter sometimes I use certain words that I think I came up with like to use to describe different emotions or events or just for emphasis. But son, it be mad people that regurgitate my ish w/out giving me any credit, B. And I derive my self-confidence from: 1) Doing the same stuff Jay-Z and Diddy do (shot out to Laf), 2) getting retweets on the TwitterNets, 3) getting comments on this blog, and 4) coming up with nerdy terms like TwitterNets and WebNerd.

For that reason Imma go ahead and put together this list joe because bamas be jye faking like they don't know who came up with these jonts.

WOMP: This is an expression that can be used to mean..."bullshyt", "suuuuuuure", "yeah right", "I'm laughing at your dumb azz", "take that" (à la Diddy), and much more. I use this mostly to say "take that", "yeah right", "bullshyt", or just for emphasis on the tail-end of something that amuses me (I'm a dork like that, you're cooler than me).

For example: "You just bought some Jellys? Sweetheart, it's 2009! WOMP!"

SCRUMPET: A scrumpet is also known as a scallywag, trifle whore, mud-duck, hoodrat, or otherwise socially, morally, and aesthetically unacceptable female. I may sometimes use this to describe a guy just to piss him off (à la calling him a "pussy azz ninja" or "eff boy").

For example: "This nasty-azz scrumpet just freaked that bama on the dancefloor and pulled her dress up in front of the whole club." You could have put a "womp" on the end of that one too by the way.

SHYTUATION: This is a circumstance in which something effed up, crazy, or otherwise flabbergasting has taken place.

For example, when you think you are sending a direct message on Twitter and you send it publicly, that's a shytuation.

YANKEE: I stole this one from my man Sean (RIP) I'm not gonna lie. A yankee is a dude that does some stuff that guys just aren't supposed to do. A yankee is probably on the same level as a clown, herb, bama, or whatever your regional slang is for a cornball.

For example: "This yankee gonna invite us all to the club saying he got a free table and bottle service, order bottles, party, and then when it's time to leave tell US the bill is $500. EFFING YANKEE!"

This is just the first few. I have some more I use in casual (verbal) conversation that'll eventually get to the TwitterNets, but until then I would appreciate a "(courtesy @mcarroll4716)" when you jock my fresh. Thanks!

Dumb Rappers Need Teaching, Charles Hamilton Edition

From my Twitter Feed: "This is what happens when cornball dudes start feeling themselves too much too early --> http://tinyurl.com/rct677

More specifically...

Charles is a young dude so I give him a bit of an excuse in that he is obviously too young in the game (dating and/or rap) to understand that when you ain't no muscle-bound dude or dude with a street rep, you can only go but so far when it comes to trying to put a chick on blast before she does something to let you know you ain't built like that. And by no means is Charles Hamilton built in the streets or in the industry to the point where he can think that any chick (no matter what his relationship with her) would put up with this bamafied mess.

Charles Hamilton not only FAILS in attire (what does this fool have on) but also fails in knowledge of the GAME. Idiot! He deserved that punch for trying to act like he was that ninja when I'm sure deep down he knows he couldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight and that's probably the flyest chick he's dealt with since started rapping. Not to mention it's allegedly his assistant and if you're not mature, you don't need to be mixing business with pleasure.

I've said it before, BEING HUMBLE > GETTING HUMBLED.

Twitter Plug

I just typed up this email to a bunch of my buddies about Twitter and I decided I wanted to share it here. I was going to call this a manifesto but then I looked up the definition and realized I'd be using the word incorrectly for what I intend to say. So therefore, I'm calling it a "plug". This is verbatim so please excuse all the lascivious and/or random banter (ha!)

My Twitter Plug

By now you've all heard of Twitter and maybe some of you have checked it out or wondered why anyone would do it. Well if you need a reason to check out Twitter or would like to try it out, follow me, Laf, and my buddies J and Lance (or just check out our pages)...

http://twitter.com/mcarroll4716

http://twitter.com/LAFgoesON (if you follow Laf you gotta address him as Curly though. That's mandatory)

Twitter is what Facebook would be if there were only status updates. Facebook is what Myspace would be if it wasn't ghetto. Myspace is what Blackplanet would be if it wasn't just targeted at negroids. Blackplanet is shyt that only bamas use at this point. Bamas are Black guys that buy Chris Cooley jerseys when they have no personal connection to him (not that I'm racist). Black guys that buy Chris Cooley jerseys when they have no personal connection to him are named....But I digress.

The point of twitter (and the value of this is obviously debatable) is so that people can send out real-time (i.e. - to the second) updates of what they're doing.

The value of twitter (again debatable but I consider it valuable) is that you can keep up with people in real time. For example if I'm in Miami and Diddy (@iamdiddy on Twitter) is hitting up a party tonight and on twitter he says "Come through Mansion tonight I'm having a party"...My black azz is going to be there! Why? Because Diddy throws some dope parties. And if it wasn't for twitter I might not have known he was having a joint on the night that I happen to be in Miami. Another example: Shaq often sends out updates when he's in different cities and tells people to stop through a certain spot and he gives them free stuff. I know these examples probably don't mean much to you but at some point enough people you know will be on [twitter] that you'll start asking why and wondering how. Just think of twitter as the most popular usage of the mobile web for the time being.

If you're a minority and you're considering going to law school, are in law school, or are practicing law, you should check out jddiversity.com.
