If you had to throw away all your CDs but one...

Which one would you keep? I was posed this question today by a co-worker that I often go back-and-forth about the content of rap music with. He says that rappers are more concerned with themselves and their possessions than they are with contributing to the genre as a whole. I can only argue with him in that regard when it comes to certain artists who don't fall into that category (Lupe, Common, Talib, etc.). Otherwise, I believe that he's right. But he doesn't listen to the music at all because of his feelings, whereas, I will still listen.

Anyway, he posed that question to me and I had to think about it seriously because if you confine it to hip-hop it's probably not as tough a decision as you would think. But if you take your entire collection of music into consideration (meaning all genres of music, including rap), then it becomes a MUCH tougher question.

With all that said, my questions to you are:
  1. If you had to throw away all your hip-hop/rap CDs but one, which one would you keep?
  2. If you had to throw away CD you have ever purchased but one, which one would you keep?

This is a really hard call to make, I am really interested in your choices...I actually don't have a Jay-Z CD that is like a must have to me....It would really be between, Kanye, Lupe Talib and the Roots for my Hip Hop CD

1. Kanye West's College Drop Out....

This one was a little easier...
2. Maze Ft. Frankie Beverly...Greatest Hits...I needs my "Golden Time of Day"

Reading this it makes me feel like #1 is for rap and that I am supposed to choose something other than rap for #2 and as bad as I would like to think it would be something different there is one album that I have played more than any other album I have ever purchased so...

1. Ready to Die
2. Ready to Die

"Biggie Smalls is the illest"

1. Makaveli
2. Luther Vandross' Greatest Hits

1. Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt (Runner-up: Nas - Illmatic)
2. Anthony Hamilton - Coming From Where I'm From (Runner-up: Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun)

Illmatic's a better album, but Jay-Z is Jay-Z. Ultra-swag! The second choice was a little more difficult because Mary J's "My Life" is the shilznit!

1. Mos Def - Black on Both Sides

2. Teedra Moses - Complex Simplicity

Some interesting picks on this one.
So Mike, you are saying that Anthony Hamilton's album is the best of your entire collection including the rap music....just want to get this str8? I agree on the quality of that album but I am not sure it's the #1 CD in my collection and I imagine you have a lot of the same Cd's as me.

Yep. I am pretty sure that album is my favorite joint ever regardless of musical genre. It's just so soulful that I can listen to the joint all day every day.

I don't think a rap CD will ever be #1 out of all my CDs (and you know I have lots of CDs) because I can feel a person's singing in my soul much more than I can feel someone's rap lyrics.

I feel alot of the stuff Jay be saying and other rappers as well. But it's a different type of "feel" than listening to "Charlene" or "I'm a Mess" or "Coming From Where I'm From". That shyt is SOUL music!

Yo, I think I saw you in a picture that my homegirl sent me from a party this weekend...You were in the urrea weren't you?

Yeah I guess I feel what you are saying Mike. It's doesn't resonate in your soul with rap like it does with R&B. Good point, maybe I should rethink my answer.

Oh and a CD must be the absolute worst if you can't even use that joint as a coaster. I remember in college someone brought that 3rd or maybe the 4th DMX album in my house and I told them to take it to their car unless they wanted me to use it as a coaster....LMMFAO!!! Yeah Mike I've been an azz about my music for a while. LOL.

Yeah, but let's distinguish between Pop-n-B (R&B) and Soul music.

Justin Timberflake = Pop-n-B

Ashanti =Pop-n-B

Ciara (as much as I love her azz) = Hip-Pop-n-B

Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, E. Badu, Floetry, John Legend, Ms. Paula Patton = Soul music (forget all that neo-soul bullish)

Some might argue that you're in azz period Dane Diddy! LOL.

Yo, don't forget the fuggin labtop either MAYNE!
