I'm thinking the interview in this magazine will go a little something like this:
"I'm Addicted to the Game". So you know what? "The Ruler's Back" for "The Takeover"! Holla! I've semi-retired for two/three years and enjoyed "Big Pimpin'" Bey, but I wasn't "Feelin' It" 'cause I've got "2 Many Hoes". So I decided once again that the "City is Mine" and "Ain't No Ni99a" (including the lil homey) messing with me.
"U Don't Know" how many times I've been "All Around the World" since I announced my retirement and ya'll wouldn't believe how much "Some People Hate". That was my motivation though. That's why "The Ruler's Back" to "Change the Game" because when you're from "Where I'm From" it's the "Things That You Do" on the mic that make you "Brooklyn's Finest", and I have to reclaim my throne. Hovie's home!
So all you "Imaginary Players" (50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, lil homey, TIP, Jeezy, Rick Ross, The Game, etc.) can "Bring It On". But I promise you that challenging me will be one of your biggest "Regrets". So, "COME AND GET MEEEEEEEEEEEE" m*th%rf&ck$rs!
Until the day my album drops, just know that "All I Need" is "Guns & Roses" to come out and "Justify My Thug". Hell, not even "Lucifer" could stop me (pun intended). Besides, you know you want this "Encore". Sorry to tell you everybody, but "Somehow, Someway" "My First Song" wasn't my last, and "Soon You'll Understand" why...
If you're a Jay-Z fan, you'll understand the quotes. If you're not, you still don't have an excuse since I'm linking to his "discography" (sort of)!
Personally, I think it's a pretty selfish move if he really does drop an album prior to mid/late December. You've got a Nas album dropping in November (7th). It's alleged that Jay's album will drop on the 14th or 21st of November, which will undoubtedly cut into Nas's sales! That's WACK! Why sign Nas to Def Jam and then release your album a week or two after his? Knowing that your immense popularity combined with the speculation of you possibly coming out of retirement (as you know Mr. Jay-Z) probably means you'll move 1,000,000 units in the first week...That's WACK! Whereas Nas will probably struggle to move 300,000 his first week considering he has YET to drop a single. You're trying to get this guy cast for "Dancing with the Stars" or the "Surreal Life", aren't you?
I love your work Jay-Z! You're my favorite rapper, the best all time in my mind. But come on man! What's really going on here? Did you get fired like the media has been speculating? Did Beyonce pull your card so much on "Ring the Alarm" that you have to take out your frustration by venting to the world via a new CD?
You're making it harder for me to take up for you when I argue with Laf over email about your selfishness and arrogance. Think about the Joe Buddens, Juelz's (okay, maybe not him so much), Jeezy, Method Mans, etc. that you have signed to your label. These guys need to eat too! But I guess not only do you overdo it thunnie when it comes to battling (see Prodigy of Mobb Deep), but you overdo it when stroking your own ego as well. Damn son, that's NOT what's really good!

I guess I can see where you are coming from somewhat but I didn't initially look at it that way. I think the move to drop the album in November was more for the sake of Def Jam and his career as a President then to outshine any one artist. He expects Nas to move his units and most of an artists units are in the first 2-3 weeks. So what better way to ensure that you fill your soundscan quota to top last years sells than by dropping 2 of the best MC's alive in the last month counted this year (I believe the music industry counts there releases from Dec - Nov just like the awards shows do). I think dude is probably trying to make sure that rumor about him losing his job doesn't come true.
I see your point Dane but I really don't think it's about that. If people know Jay is dropping an album they ain't thinking about Nas. Think about it, some people might even hold off on buying Nas's joint just to hold the money for Hov's CD dropping a couple weeks later.
Jay might be about to lose his job but I don't think he would drop an album just to save his job b/c he's smart enough to know that once his album sales finally slow down in early 2007 he'd be right back to where he started from. And it would buy him some time, but not enough time. He'd have been better off investing this time and resources into several of the decent artists already on the label.
I definitely think this is just Jay-Z doing what he wants to do because he knows he can. Hell, what label is the album even coming out on? He's not a Roc-A-Fella artist anymore and does the fact that he's Def Jam president really mean he HAS TO drop an album on Def Jam? I dunno. The whole thing seems at once fishy and exciting to be honest. Fishy because the timing is just ill and bad if you ask me. But exciting because it's f&cking Jay-Z dropping another joint.
Man you know what label the album is gonna be on....THE ROC!!!! LOL. You faking like the owner of the label can't sign himself to a one year deal.
I see what you are saying but I still would be inclined that he is trying to buy himself some time. I mean when you have the Def Jam poster boy talking about your promotion skills you have to regroup. Jeezy aint do the numbers that he did on the first album so who else does he have besides his own project? I think he is buying time but we probably are both right in some aspects. His ego probably wants to see how he will be regarded and prove a point too.
You're right. I read online today it's being dropped on Rocafella/DefJam. You're right...That was a little naive of me. FYI - Jeezy's second album hasn't dropped yet...What are you talking about?
I can't stand to hear bad things about Jay, whether their true or not... I just can't... =/
My bad I thought the Jeezy joint came out last month...my bad. You know it doesn't matter to me anyway.
JAC, If you think me and Dane are funny on these comments, you should hear us live, unedited, and uncut. LMAO! Also, I used to feel like you, but it is what it is. gotta call a spade a spade. "I gotsta talk about life the way I see it" - Martin Lawrence
Dane, you might be right about that theory to save Def Jam's sales. A lot of people are starting to lean that way. Not me though! I still have this hope/dream that this is all a smokescreen for the best duet album ever to drop-drop-drop-drop-drop like it's HOT!
Nikka, Jeezy first joint was TIGHT TOO! If you like Rick Ross (which I'm sure you prolly don't anyway so why am I saying this) then you gotta like Jeezy. There the same friggin person!
Makin money strictly off record sales isn't realistic nowadays. But there are other ways for an artist to make money like touring, endorsement deals, creating other business ventures, etc. But for the average artist who just raps, they gotta do a lot of shows every year (on top of having a decent album) to make some bread. Piracy plays a part, but the artists don't make that much money off the sale of their CD anyway. I mean most of them only get like $0.07 off each CD sold/shipped. That's NOTHING in the big scheme of things.
And yes, I'd buy the gift pack with Jay and Nas. I'd buy Jay's CD if it costs $20 just for his joint. LOL. If I like the artist and he's proven, I'll buy his stuff.
I'm pretty sure Mike would by Jay's CD no matter what it cost. I do recall a young fellow from Capitol Heights letting me know "Jay-Z deserves every dime I've got."
There's loving the music, and then there's "Godfather"-type loyalty.
This album better be that deal.
P.S. the walk down memory lane (via song titles) is hella hott.
What's funny Lauren, is that I have since making that statement long ago, backed down from that a bit. Dane can attest to the serious arguments I've gotten in over a hip-hop forum we're a part of (online) about Jay-Z. There's a guy on there who loves to argue with me about Jay-Z and he has (over time) made some very valid points about Jay-Z's character that I can't really dispute. But as far as the music, Jay rarely disappoints ME. And it's not b/c I'm a Stan or anything, but just because the dude is talented. It's similar to how I feel about Erykah Badu or Jill Scott or Marsha from Floetry. Always worth the price of purchase.
Well I am late, I will be gettin both albums, don't know nor do I really care about the "marketing" plan behind the J and Nas album issue...but please believe there IS in fact a marketing tool being used...J is a smart man and so is Nas...both albums WILL sale...furthermore, I don't think that his job as president is really in trouble...but that's just my opinion...Jay has some isses with his character but it what it is...I will still buy his music...don't know him personally, don't have to work with him, don't have to love him, be his woman, so as long as his character doesn't have a major "moral" violation, who am I to care about it....seriously
Nas will drop his sales will do well like dane said and then J will drop and be straight...there goes the numbers for Def Jam for the first year...J will put out fire and I am sure he is working closely with Nasir Jones to make sure that he does the same...
my five cents....
Both albums WILL sell but I'll bet any amount of money there will be a HUGE discrepancy between how many each album sales. Like first week Nas does 300,000...But first week Jay does 800,000. And in the end it'll prolly end up with Nas going platinum just barely (I mean, speaking of marketing, where's his FIRST single???) and Jay's joint going like 4 or 5 times platinum. We ALL KNOW Jay's album will be going double-platinum just off his name alone. Whatever he sells on top of the first 2 million will tell you the true quality of the album.
jay is far from losing his job!!!!.the "lack of promo" is not even his or L.A Reid's fault.Universal (the company that owns island def jam) only invests a lot of money(in promotion etc) on artists that have projected high sales or are more likely to make them a lot of money in the future e.g(rihanna, neyo, lady sovereign, young jeezy).they are at the end of the day a business not a charity organisation for rappers!
